Lisa Gartrell, PMHNP-BC, CARN-AP, is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with more than 30 years of nursing experience and over six years of advanced practice experience providing compassionate, evidence-based mental health care. She specializes in psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and addiction medicine, caring for adolescents, adults, and older adults with a wide range of psychiatric and co-occurring behavioral health conditions. Lisa believes in treating the whole person, recognizing the close connection between mental and physical health while partnering with patients to achieve lasting emotional wellness.
Lisa earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Adelphi University before completing her Master of Science in Nursing and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification at Maryville University. She began her nursing career serving in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and later spent nearly two decades at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she cared for patients in emergency medicine, served as an Emergency Department Shift Coordinator, and eventually transitioned into advanced practice psychiatry with the Johns Hopkins Addiction Medicine Service.
Since becoming a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Lisa has built extensive experience across addiction medicine, consultation-liaison psychiatry, emergency psychiatry, inpatient behavioral health, and partial hospitalization programs. While practicing with the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center, she provided psychiatric care across inpatient psychiatric units, emergency services, consultation-liaison psychiatry, and medical specialties, including pediatrics, obstetrics, geriatrics, and substance use treatment. Her clinical expertise includes treating co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depressive and anxiety disorders, trauma-related conditions, eating disorders, and postpartum psychiatric conditions. She is also experienced in medication-assisted treatment (MAT), including buprenorphine prescribing, opioid withdrawal management, low-dose (micro) inductions, and medications supporting recovery from alcohol use disorder. In recognition of her expertise, she earned the Certified Addiction Registered Nurse -Advanced Practice (CARN-AP) credential.
Lisa is known for her calm, collaborative approach and her ability to care for individuals experiencing complex psychiatric and medical needs. She believes effective treatment begins with listening, building trust, and developing individualized treatment plans that reflect each person’s goals and circumstances. Through compassionate psychiatric care, evidence-based medication management, and a strong commitment to recovery, Lisa remains dedicated to helping patients build healthier, more fulfilling lives.
