May: Mental Health Awareness Month

Published on: May 15, 2025

mental health awareness

May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, a nationwide observance dedicated to elevating the conversation around mental well-being, combating stigma, and advocating for accessible mental health resources. For Florida, this month is more than a campaign; it’s an urgent call to action. With millions of residents grappling with mental health challenges, May presents a vital opportunity to cultivate empathy, understanding, and meaningful change across the Sunshine State.

The State of Mental Health in Florida

Florida is facing a profound mental health crisis that affects people in every community. Approximately three million adults in Florida live with a mental illness- the highest figure in the nation. Of these, about 648,000 experience serious mental illness each year. Yet, more than half of those affected do not receive the treatment they need, often due to financial barriers or limited access to care.

Key statistics underscore the scope of the issue:

  • 1 in 5 adults in Florida faces mental illness each year.
  • 180,000 youth aged 12–17 struggle with depression, and more than 64% go without care.
  • Over 3,500 Floridians die by suicide annually, while more than 610,000 adults seriously consider it each year.
  • Nearly 6.4 million residents live in areas with a shortage of mental health professionals.
  • High school students with depression are over twice as likely to drop out compared to their peers.

These numbers are not just data points- they represent family members, friends, neighbors, and colleagues whose lives are affected daily.

Breaking the Stigma: Every Story Matters

This year’s theme, “In Every Story, There’s Strength,” reminds us that everyone’s mental health journey is unique, yet the resilience found in overcoming adversity is universal. We chip away at the walls of stigma and isolation by sharing personal stories of struggle, recovery, or ongoing challenges. When Floridians speak openly about mental health, they inspire others to seek help and foster a culture of acceptance and support.

“Every challenge shapes us. We empower others to do the same by owning and sharing our journeys. Our shared experiences ignite courage, foster healing, and build profound connections, creating a powerful movement of collective strength.”

Barriers to Care: A Call for Change

Despite the growing need, Florida consistently ranks near the bottom nationally for access to mental health care and workforce availability. Nearly 13.6% of Floridians with mental illness are uninsured, making treatment even more challenging to access. Many are forced to seek care outside their insurance networks, resulting in higher costs and longer wait times. The consequences of inadequate support are far-reaching, contributing to higher rates of homelessness, incarceration, and school dropout among those with untreated mental health conditions.

How Floridians Can Make a Difference

Mental Health Awareness Month is more than raising awareness about sparking real action. Here’s how you can help drive change in Florida.

  • Share Your Story: Speak up on social media, in your community, or with loved ones. Personal experiences foster empathy and understanding.
  • Advocate for Policy Change: Support local and state efforts to expand mental health care access, increase funding, and address workforce shortages.
  • Support Each Other: Check in on friends, family, and neighbors. Small gestures of kindness and attentive listening can make a life-saving difference.
  • Educate Yourself and Others: Learn to recognize the signs of mental health challenges and respond appropriately. Knowledge is a powerful tool for breaking stigma and connecting people to help.
  • Get Involved: Engage with organizations like NAMI Florida, the Florida Mental Health Advocacy Coalition, or local support groups to participate in events, campaigns, and advocacy.

A Strong Message for Florida

Mental health is health-full stop. No one should have to endure mental illness alone or in silence. In Florida, where millions are affected and too many go without care, it’s time to transform awareness into action. By sharing our stories, supporting one another, and demanding better systems, we can build a future where mental health is a priority and every Floridian can access the care and compassion they deserve.

Let’s make May the turning point. Let’s ensure that mental health is not just a topic for one month, but a daily commitment in every Florida community. Your voice matters. Your story matters. Together, we can create a stronger, healthier Florida for all.
