What is Separation Anxiety Disorder in Children?

Published on: November 15, 2021

Seperation Anxiety

Separation Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is a sort of mental health problem, which is not so common among people. A kid with SAD stresses significantly over being separated from family members or other close individuals. The children have a dream of being lost from their family or of something awful happening to a family member if someone is not with that individual.

Separation anxiety in kids is a formative stage where the kid is anxious when isolated from the essential caregiver (normally the mother).

They have not yet grown the possibility that a hidden item is still there (object permanence). Children can become anxious and dreadful when a parent leaves their sight. Separation anxiety is generally at its top somewhere in the range of 10 and 18 months. It ordinarily finishes when a kid is 3 years of age.

Symptoms of Separation Anxiety Disorder

Separation anxiety disorder is analyzed when side effects are inordinate for the developmental age and cause huge distress in day by day working. The symptoms might include:

  • Repetitive and exorbitant distress about expecting or being away from home or loved ones and family.
  • Consistent, increased stress over losing a parent or other loved one to a sickness or an accident.
  • Constant concern that something bad will occur, like being lost or abducted, causing separation from parents or friends and family.
  • Declining to be away from home as a result of dread of separation.
  • Not having any desire to be home alone and without a parent or other loved one in the house.
  • Hesitance or declining to sleep away from home without a parent or other closed one.
  • Repeated bad dreams about separation.
  • Continuous complaints of headaches, stomachaches, or different symptoms when separation from a parent or other closed one is expected.

Separation anxiety disorder might be related to the panic problem and fits of anxiety, reoccurring episodes of abrupt feelings of serious anxiety and dread or fear that arrive at a top in practically no time.

Risk Factors and Causes of Separation Anxiety Disorder

Separation anxiety disorder (similarly as with most psychological health conditions) is commonly caused by the blend of hereditary and environmental flaws as opposed regardless of any single thing.

As well as being more common in kids with family backgrounds of anxiety and stress, children whose moms were stressed during pregnancy with them will generally be more at risk of getting this problem.

A larger portion of kids with separation anxiety disorder have school refusal as a sign, and up to 80% of children who decline school qualify for the diagnosis of separation anxiety disorder. Roughly half 75% of children who experience the side effects of this problem come from homes of low financial status.

When to Consult with the Psychiatrists?

Separation anxiety disorder should not be overlooked at any cost. The treatment is the essential part to get rid of it. The untreated separation disorder could lead to panic attacks and other anxiety issues in adulthood. Parents need to consult with the doctor when they notice any of the above-mentioned signs and symptoms of separation disorder before they worsen.
