The 5 Approaches for Neuropsychological Testing

Published on: October 18, 2021

Neuropsychological Testing

A neuropsychological evaluation is used to measure a person’s brain and how it is responding. The assessment has a goal to figure out a person’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses. Neuropsychological testing helps to determine if a person has any cognitive dysfunction which has been later treated with certain therapies and medications.

What is Neuropsychological Testing?

Neuropsychology emphasizes the two factors, the structure of the brain and its psychological behavior. When people observe having issues in decision making or concentrating, they are recommended to have neuropsychological testing to discover what the actual problem is. The evaluation has been done following a series of questions asked by the specialist, or some comprehensive tests are conducted to figure out the current behavior.

Approaches for Neuropsychological Testing

The doctor observes the concentration level, attention, and response towards the details. There are some approaches that usually doctors follow to complete the evaluation and give any concluding diagnosis to start the treatment.

1)      Memory Test

This is commonly known to be done using a paper-and-pencil test or computerized testing that defines the language, concentration, memory, reaction, response, perception, attention, and so on. Most of the time, the doctor asked certain questions from the past or family history to test the memory. In other cases, the experts give a series of words, letters, or numbers to remember or ask to repeat the sentences.

2)      Motor Function Test

The motor function test typically includes movement and coordination. In this test, the doctors observe the ability of the individual to coordinate with eye-hand movements, balance, and motor speed. These tasks look simple in general, but they play an important role in performing daily life tasks. The motor dexterity ensures you can work creatively like story writing etc. This test is most common in the case of children who are not performing well in academics and sports. Moreover, the individuals who suffered from head trauma, tumors, or stroke are tested for motor skills.

3)      Problem Solving and Decision Making

Problem-solving and decision-making are both related to cognitive psychology. It is an example of critical thinking and is known to be a rational approach. This testing identifies how an individual responds to the problem and recommends a solution. The doctors observe how the patient is approaching the gap and making the right timely decision to fill it out.

4)      Verbal Communication Test

This is the test conducted to figure out the patient’s ability to read and understand the written text. The doctor may ask you several questions of your interest to observe the perceived response. In other cases, the doctor gives a list of letters and asks the patient to write down the words that start with that letter.

5)      Cognition Test

This type of test includes answering the questions or performing certain tasks. Cognitive testing identifies how an individual is perceiving the problem or question and responds to that. It determines the ability of a person to learn, remember and understand.
