Pervez Akhter, M.D., is a Board Certified Psychiatrist with 17 years of experience working with adults, children, adolescents, and geriatric patients. He has experience treating individuals with a wide range of mental health conditions.
Dr. Akhter earned his medical degree from Dow University of Health Sciences in Karachi, Pakistan. He completed a general psychiatry residency at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minnesota, followed by a Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center (affiliated with Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York). He went on to complete a Fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry at the State University of New York.
Dr. Akhter has taught psychiatry to medical students, residents, and fellows at several hospitals in New York. He also has participated in research involving multisystemic therapy (MST) as chief psychiatrist at The New York Foundling child welfare agency.
Dr. Akhter has served as a psychiatrist in outpatient, inpatient, and emergency department settings. He has experience treating patients with substance abuse disorders and various psychiatric diagnoses, including autism spectrum disorder. He also is experienced in using different types of psychotherapy, including MST, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), behavioral therapy, and functional family therapy (FFT).
