Emotions are what move us. They are a driving force. Any day, a range of emotions can take you on a roller coaster that brings you up and then takes you down the very next moment, without any warning- a sudden deep plunge, turning your world upside down and kicking you around before taking you on a high again. Emotions are an important part of being human. They cause us to feel, think and act in different ways. They are complex reactions that engage our bodies and minds and play a very important role in how we think, feel, and behave.
The physical aspects of emotions include bodily changes experienced by the individual like sweating, dry mouth, increased heart rate, etc when they experience an emotion. When strong emotions such as fear or anger occur, various glands in the body are activated and secrete chemical hormones which spread and activate various centers of the brain and neuromuscular system to bring about these changes. The behavioralaspects point out to how someone responds to a given situation, for eg., some of us wring or rub hands when anxious, fidget or exhibit habits like nail-biting or picking the lips. The behavioralaspects are the most obvious and observable aspects of human emotions.
Emotional literacy is the ability to recognize, understand and express our emotions appropriately. If we see literacy as the basic unit or the building block to be able to read, write or comprehend information, emotional intelligence is considered as the building block or the basis for understanding, communicating and perceiving emotions. It is like how grammar, alphabets, and vocabulary are to understanding and communicating in English. The ability to recognize our emotions or difficulties and deal with them skillfully, both alone and in collaboration with others is known as emotional intelligence. It is the capacity to recognize, comprehend and control one’s moods and feelings and other people’s as well.
A lack of awareness of one’s emotions makes it harder to regulate them. This is one of the biggest barriers to developing emotional intelligence. Cultural and societal norms can shape the way emotions are expressed or perceived. In some cultures, openly expressing emotions may be discouraged. Such individuals may develop struggles with emotional regulations, trust, and empathy. Healing from these experiences and seeking professional help may be necessary to overcome the barriers. It is important to notice while such barriers may exist, they can be addressed and overcome with proper and timely identification and support.
The ultimate goal of every nation is to improve the general population’s overall wellbeing. This includes not just preventing diseases, injuries and other physical ailments, but also nurturing positive outcomes that improve quality of life. In today’s tech savvy age, we have a wide range of options to choose health services, especially mental health services from. Distance, time and societal stigmas are some of the main reasons why people neglect or refuse to take timely health for their mental health.
Telepsychiatry services provide a one stop solution to all these. It gives an individual enhanced accessibility regardless of the geographical constraints, convenience and flexibility, timely support from qualified psychiatrists, psychologists and other therapists who provide sessions of whatever form of treatment is apt for each individual. Their services range from individual counseling to medical management of patients. One no longer needs to struggle without support when it is needed the most.
Emotions and emotional intelligence play a critical role in the success of an individual right from their childhood days. It impacts their nature and habits as children, determines their mind voice and the attitude through which they see themselves and the world around. It influences their response to various situations in life- success, failure, loss etc. Investing in nurturing emotions and good mental health from a young age is critical for the holistic development of an individual. By nurturing emotional intelligence, they are empowered with the skills needed to navigate the challenges of life and succeed in their personal and professional pursuits. By prioritizing emotional intelligence and nurturing emotional health among youth, we can foster a generation that is empathetic, self-aware and equipped to build a better world for themselves and others.
