How to fight depression: 10 ways to reduce moderate to severe Depression

Published on: October 10, 2022

fight depression

You’re not alone in your struggle with depression symptoms. Millions of people feel the same way you do—and they’re counting on you to find a solution.

Depression is a severe health condition that can affect anyone at any age. It’s estimated that between 3% and 25% of the population suffers from depression. Despite its prevalence, it’s still not well understood, and treatment options are limited. In addition, it can be a debilitating illness that makes it hard to get out of bed in the morning and keep up with daily tasks. Although there are many ways to treat depression, you can also try these ten natural remedies to help reduce the symptoms of moderate to severe depression.

1. Get up and get moving

Although exercise may seem like the last thing you want to do when you’re depressed, studies show that training is one of the most effective ways to treat mild to moderate depression. A study found that physical activity was just as effective as medication for treating mild depression. Other research suggests that even more intense workouts are more effective than antidepressants at preventing relapses in people with major depressive disorder.

2. Take Enough Sleep

Make sure you get enough sleep every night—no more than an hour less than what’s recommended for your age group (for example, if you’re over 55 years old, that means 7-8 hours per night). If this is difficult for you because of depression-related insomnia, try getting up early in the morning instead of going to bed early at night; this will help reset your circadian rhythm so that it’s easier for you to fall asleep later on in the evening when it’s time for bed!

3. Eat Healthily

Eat healthy foods that help boost your mood and energy levels, like leafy greens, whole grains like oats and brown rice, lean meats, fruits like blueberries and bananas, and nuts like walnuts or almonds (make sure you eat them in moderation because they’re high in calories!), beans/legumes such as chickpeas or lentils; stay away from processed foods like chips/candy bars because they’re high in sugar and saturated fats which can cause weight gain which then leads to low self-esteem which then causes depression again because you feel unattractive so maybe it’s time to try on those jeans again… see where I’m going here?

4. Laugh out loud

Even if you don’t feel like laughing! Laughter releases endorphins that boost mood and reduce stress hormones in the body. Laughing can be a great mood booster and will help you feel better about yourself.

5. Spend time with friends and family

Spending time with others and doing social activities who care about you will make you feel more loved and supported, which is one of the best ways to overcome depression. You’ll get a natural mood boost from being around others who care about you!

6. Stay Social

It’s essential to keep up with your friends, but it also helps if you can find ways to make new connections—go out and meet new people! Don’t isolate yourself because of depression or anxiety; instead, reach out to others so they can help you through this challenging time!

7. Practice gratitude daily

When you’re feeling down, it can be hard to see the upside of anything. But if you take just a few minutes each day to reflect on what you’re grateful for, it can help boost your mood and even promote better sleep.

8. Do small things that make you feel good about yourself (e.g., getting your hair done, buying a new outfit)

Doing something for yourself is a great way to lift your spirits, but it’s also important to be mindful of how much time and energy you put into these activities. If they start taking over your schedule and making it harder for you to get other things done—or if they make other people feel like they’re not as important as what makes YOU happy—it might be time to cut back on them until this phase passes!

9. Spend time in nature

Spending time in nature has been shown to reduce depression and anxiety, and it’s a great way to relax after a long day. Try going for a walk outside and enjoying the sounds of birds chirping or the breeze blowing through the trees. You can also try gardening, which has been shown to reduce stress levels by up to 65%!

10. Practice mindfulness

Mindfulness is a way of paying attention to the present moment without judgment or expectation. It’s about being aware of your thoughts and feelings without judging them—just observing them as they come and go. Mindfulness can help you become more aware of your own emotions, which can help you cope when you’re feeling depressed or stressed out by something that happened in your life.
