Dr. Van Slyck brings extensive clinical experience working with adults in substance-use treatment settings, where he has provided individual, group, and couples therapy for individuals with substance-use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. His graduate internship and post-graduate clinical training were completed in residential and outpatient treatment environments, providing a strong foundation in addiction-informed and recovery-oriented care. While substance-use treatment is a key area of expertise, Dr. Van Slyck also works with adults experiencing a wide range of emotional, relational, and psychological concerns.
His therapeutic approach is integrative and theory-driven, rather than technique-limited. Dr. Van Slyck primarily draws from psychodynamic and cognitive frameworks, helping clients explore how early life experiences, unconscious patterns, and belief systems influence current functioning. He also incorporates cognitive restructuring strategies to support clients in identifying and modifying unhelpful or self-defeating thought patterns. Clients often note his ability to listen deeply, clarify emotional experiences, and foster insight into the connections between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Van Slyck has an extensive academic background and has served as Department Chair and faculty member in psychology programs at multiple universities. His combined experience in education and clinical practice informs a thoughtful, structured, and compassionate therapeutic style. He is committed to creating a respectful and supportive environment where clients feel heard, understood, and empowered to pursue meaningful personal growth and lasting change.
