Julio Castro-Gayol, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist with more than 20 years of experience providing comprehensive psychiatric care in both inpatient and outpatient settings. He earned his medical degree from the Instituto Superior de Ciencias Médicas de La Habana in Cuba. He completed his psychiatry residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center in New York.
Dr. Castro-Gayol pursued advanced subspecialty training through fellowships in Addiction Psychiatry at North Shore University Hospital–LIJ and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. He also completed a Visiting Fellowship at Harvard Medical School and holds unrestricted medical licensure in the state of Florida.
Throughout his career, Dr. Castro-Gayol has cared for diverse patient populations across a wide range of clinical environments. He has served as an Adult Outpatient Psychiatrist at Leon Medical Centers since 2015 and previously worked as an Adult Inpatient Psychiatrist at Guidance Care Center in the Florida Keys. His professional experience also includes roles at Indian River Medical Center, Promesa Systems, and Family Preservation Services of Florida. Before practicing in the United States, he worked extensively as a primary care and hospital physician in Cuba, providing a strong foundation in comprehensive, whole-person medical care.
Dr. Castro-Gayol’s clinical interests include adult psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, child and adolescent mental health, and consultation-liaison psychiatry. In addition to his clinical work, he has been actively involved in psychiatric research and has served as Principal Investigator for a tardive dyskinesia study. His scholarly contributions include research and publications in Alzheimer’s disease, child development, pain semiology, preventive medicine, and public health.
