Dr. Heather Fowler (Prout) Cumbo, M.D., is a board-certified Psychiatrist with over a decade of experience providing comprehensive, patient-centered care. She specializes in child and adolescent psychiatry, adult psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, addiction treatment, and consultation-liaison psychiatry.
Dr. Cumbo earned her Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 2008. She completed her psychiatry residency at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in 2014, where she developed expertise in inpatient, outpatient, and consultation-liaison psychiatry. Before starting her psychiatry training, she pursued Internal Medicine training at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina Greensboro.
Board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), Dr. Cumbo maintains active medical licenses in Florida, Ohio, and North Dakota, along with DEA licenses for these states. She has extensive clinical experience in various settings, ranging from rural hospitals to high-acuity urban medical centers. Dr. Cumbo has held key roles, including Assistant Medical Director at Directions for Living, and she currently serves patients at Harbor Behavioral Health and Mind Elements Psychiatry PLLC.
Dr. Cumbo is passionate about providing evidence-based care to underserved populations, with a focus on recovery-oriented approaches and innovative therapies for mood disorders, addiction, and neurodevelopmental conditions. Her commitment to building strong patient-provider relationships is rooted in empathy, collaboration, and respect, tailoring each treatment plan to the individual’s needs.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Cumbo has contributed to academic psychiatry through teaching, mentorship, and presentations on recovery-oriented care, paraneoplastic syndromes, and the ethics of involuntary treatment. Her research has been published in journals like Anesthesiology and Substance Use and Misuse and has been presented at national conferences.
